Spider-Man 3 to Open in China

(March 31, 2007) In an effort to combat piracy in China, Columbia Pictures is launching Spider-Man 3 in China one day before it opens in the United States.

Spider-Man 3 hits U.S. theaters on May 4, 2007, but will open in China on May 3, 2007. A newspaper in China, The Shanghai Morning Post, first broke the news a couple of weeks ago that China would see Spider-Man 3 before U.S. audiences.

More studios are releasing big movies in China at the same time as the U.S. because they believe it hurts piracy in China, which seems to flourish when China audiences don't get a movie for several months after the movie's release in the U.S.

Many of the big stars from Spider-Man 3 are also expected to do media appearances in China beginning in mid-April. Included in that list is actor Tobey Maguire and actress Kirsten Dunst.
