Spider-Man Trilogy Could Bring End to Franchise

(July 21, 2006) When Spider-Man first hit theaters in 2002, it was the start of a new superhero franchise. However, since the main cast and crew were signed only to a three picture deal, there is now speculation as to whether or not we'll ever see Spider-Man 4. Kirsten Dunst has made it clear that she's not terribly interested in Spider-Man 4. And now Spider-Man himself is weighing in. Tobey Maguire has expressed doubt about Spider-Man taking flight beyond number three, at least with him in the outfit.

"We've done an amazing job at keeping things fresh," Maguire told newspaper USA TODAY. "it's hard to imagine continuously coming up with stories that deserve to be told. I'm not sure if there are more stories for this character that are interesting enough to be excited about doing more."

USA TODAY also states that producers claim that the Spider-Man movies were always meant to be a "trilogy" which could explain why we've gone from two movies with one villain in each, to the final installment with four villains.

Even if this is the end for this Spider-Man team, it doesn't mean that another team can't come in and "remake" Spiderman with different people. Movies like Batman Begins and Superman Returns are proof that franchises can survive with a different cast, crew, and new direction.
