Shrek
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Is
Shrek the highest grossing animated movie of all time?
In 2001, Shrek amassed huge box office numbers, bringing in nearly
$268 million domestically. Amazingly enough, that wasn't enough
to put it ahead of The Lion King, which brought in $328 million
domestically. But the story doesn't end there. Shrek 2 was huge
and by the time the dust settled, Shrek 2 topped The Lion King
with a whopping domestic take of $441 million. That not only makes
it the highest grossing animated movie of all time, but also the
third highest-grossing movie ever (as of August 2006).
What
is the reason for the PG rating? Aren't most animated movies rated
G?
Most animated movies are rated G, but Shrek tried to widen it's
audience base with humor aimed at adults too. The official reason
for the PG rating was, "mild language and some crude humor." The
rating was given by the Motion Picture Association of America.
Shrek
was a great original movie concept. Who came up with it?
A lot of people don't know this, but Shrek is actually based upon
a children's book by William Steig called "Shrek". Of course,
the book doesn't directly target Disney with its humor like the movie
does. DreamWorks/PDI took a lot of leeway in making the movie "their
own".
When
the characters enter the Duloc theme park, "animatronic" characters
play a song. What are the lyrics to that song?
The
lyrics for the Duloc song were written by Eric Darnell and go as
follows:
Didn't
Shrek win an Oscar?
Yes. Shrek won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in the
first year that category was offered at the Academy Awards. Here
was the speech given by Aron Warner, who accepted the Oscar.
Who
is Aron Warner?
Aron Warner was a producer for Shrek and the head of DreamWorks/PDI
at the time Shrek was released to the public. But audiences may
know him better as the voice of the Big Bad Wolf.
I heard a rumor that Mike Myers wasn't the original voice of Shrek.
Is that true?
Well, in the movie he is the voice of Shrek. But that wasn't
always the case. Chris Farley was originally cast as the voice
of Shrek, but unfortunately he passed away during the voice production.
Mike Myers was brought on board to finish the movie and rerecord
the parts Farley already had completed.
