Gerard Butler plays the disfigured musical
genius who haunts and terrorizes the occupants of the Paris Opera.
He lives below the Paris Opera and, falls in love with innocent
chorus girl Christine Daae, played by Emmy Rossum, he begins to
nurture her talents and, in a way, execute a sense of control
over her. Only ballet mistress Madame Giry, played by Miranda
Richardson, knows that mysterious person Christine refers to as
her “Angel of Music” is actually the Phantom.
When La Carlotta, played by Minnie Driver, walks out in the
middle of a dress rehearsal for the opera, there is no choice
but to bring Christine in to replace the moody star. Christine’s
amazing opening night performance mesmerizes all the audience,
including the Phantom and one of the theatre’s wealthy patrons,
the Vicompte Raoul de Chagny (Patrick Wilson). The Phantom is
determined to make Christine the opera’s next star while Raoul
is determined to court her.
Christine, although still very much attached to the Phantom,
is drawn to the handsome Raoul, which enrages the Phantom. This
rivalry sets the stage for a dramatic finale, full of soaring
passions, jealousies and obsessions.
