What are the Most Successful Animated Movies Ever? |
|
Inflation makes it hard to answer this question, because if you adjust for inflation then Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the most successful animated movie of all time followed by Fantasia in second.
However, if you just count box office receipts, the top 10 animated movies begin to look very different. As of February 1, 2007:
1. Shrek 2 ($441 million)
2. Finding Nemo ($339.7 million)
3. The Lion King ($328.5 million)
4. Shrek ($267.6 million)
5. The Incredibles ($261.4 million)
6. Monsters, Inc. ($255.8 million)
7. Toy Story 2 ($245.8 million)
8. Cars ($244 million)
9. Aladdin ($217.3 million)
10. Ice Age: The Meltdown ($195.3 million)
The list, of course, will continue to change as big movies like Shrek The Third are released. Studying the list is interesting because you learn:
-
Only two of the top 10 animated movies of all time are traditional animation (Aladdin and The Lion King).
-
DreamWorks is the only animation company to have an original movie and its sequel both appear in the list (Shrek and Shrek 2).
-
Pixar accounts for five of the top 10 movies on the list (Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Toy Story 2, Cars).
Animated movies are a big business and every year more companies jump on board forming partnerships or animation studios to try and get a lucrative piece of the pie. Only one company, however, has consistently released a blockbuster everytime it has put out a movie. It’s not Disney… not DreamWorks… it is Pixar (which ironically is now a part of Disney after agreeing to a merger).
