What are the Top Three Highest-Grossing Films Ever?
print this page

The list of top grossing movies changes often because as time goes on, movie ticket prices increase with inflation. And if you used inflation to factor in past hits, much older movies like Gone with the Wind and Snow White would top the list.

However, the way it stands, based on actual grosses, the top three highest-grossing movies of all time are:

#1 – Titanic ($600.8 million)
#2 – Star Wars ($460.9 million)
#3 – Shrek 2 ($441.2 million)

So far Titanic, released in 1997, is standing up to the test of time and many theorize that it will take years for another movie to unseat it. While Titanic didn’t break any opening weekend records, it consistently did well week after week for months.

Star Wars, originally released in 1977, didn’t make it to #2 from its original release. It took a couple of rereleases to boost it to that spot.

Shrek 2 is the highest-grossing animated film of all time, making more than $180 million at the Box Office than the original Shrek movie.

The top three highest-grossing IMAX movies of all time are:

#1 – Everest ($87.2 million)
#2 – Space Station 3D ($64.8 million)
#3 – T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous ($52.7 million)
