Star Trek XI To Hit Theaters Christmas Day 2008

"Lost" director J.J. Abrams will direct the Star Trek feature film for Paramount Pictures

The Star Trek film franchise is about to expand with its 11th feature film planned for a December 2008 release date. The newest Star Trek movie will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose previous work includes such notable television shows as Lost, Alias and films such as Mission Impossible III.

Abrams will be joining forces with his previous Mission Impossible III friends, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci who wrote the screenplay and will executive produce with Bryan Burk. J.J. Abrams and "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof will produce. The film will begin shooting this fall to be released on Christmas Day 2008.

One of the most popular film and television franchises of all time, Star Trek has encompassed 726 total episodes for television in six different series, beginning with the original 1966-1969 series created by Gene Roddenberry. The 10 "Star Trek" films preceding this new movie have grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

The latest Star Trek installment will be a prequel, focusing on a young Captain Kirk and Spock.
