Shopgirl, based on Steve Martin’s novella, is a story of love in the modern age, showing both the funny and the poignant sides of modern love. The film looks at the lives of three very different people. All are on diverse paths but all are in search of the same thing.
Mirabelle (Claire Danes) is a “plain Jane” working at the popular glove counter at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Mirabelle, an artist at heart, is working to take control of financial struggles due to student loans and credit card debt. She keeps to herself until a wealthy older man named Ray Porter (Steve Martin) pops into her life and sweeps her off her feet.
While charmed by Ray, Mirabelle is, at the same time, being pursued by Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a bachelor more her own age but less cultured, successful, and worldly than Ray. When fate has a hand in the situation the outcome may not be ideal, but it is, in the end, life.
