In Million Dollar Baby, boxing trainer Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) has trained and managed several powerful fighters and the most important lesson he always teaches his boxers is: above all, always protect yourself.  Frankie lives by that motto.  Due to a painful estrangement from his daughter, boxing trainer Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) has not let himself get close to anyone for a very long time.  His only friend is his ex-boxer friend Scrap (Morgan Freeman).  Only Scrap knows that under Frankie’s gruff exterior is a deeply religious and conscious-ridden man who has attended Mass almost every day for the past 23 years, seeking forgiveness for his past.

One day, Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) walks into his gym, changing his life forever.  Maggie’s grew up without much, but the one thing she does have is a strong knowledge of what she wants and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get it.  Maggie’s life was filled with struggle and heartache but she was able to get herself far on raw talent, unshakable focus, and a tremendous force of will.  She wants more than anything for someone to believe in her.

When Maggie asks Frankie to train her as a boxer, Frankie tells her she’s too old and he doesn’t train girls.   Unwilling or unable to give up on her life’s ambition, Maggie wears herself to the bone at the gym every day, encouraged only by Scrap.  Finally won over by Maggie’s sheer resolve and willpower, Frankie hesitantly agrees to take her on.

While working together they both realize that they share a common pain and feeling of loss based on their pasts, and find in each other a sense of family they lost long ago.  An unexpected even, however, will try both their hearts and their courage more than either has ever known.
