Munich, directed by three-time Oscar winning director/producer Steven Spielberg, is an historical thriller set during the time after the 1972 massacre at the Munich Olympics of 11 Israeli athletes. In the aftermath of the killing, a secret Israeli squad has been assigned to find and assassinate 11 Palestinians that are believed to have been behind the planning of the Munich 1972 attack.
The film follows the group of Israeli men as they plan and execute their attacks on those they have been told to assassinate and the toll it takes on the men. A focus is put on the extreme personal conflicts that the Mossad agent (Eric Bana) chosen to lead the secret Israeli group has to face.
Inspired by actual events, the story behind Munich is based on several sources, including those that participated in the events. Munich marks the first feature film for writter Tony Kushner who has previously won both a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, among others for his Broadway drama Angels in America and the HBO adaptation.
